Bobby Henderson's e-mail to the Kansas School Board is written in a form we'll explore in Unit 4: It identifies a problem and proposes a solution. It drew attention to the School Board's assault on evolution and helped generate widespread derision. The board members eventually were voted out of office.
A visit to Henderson's Web site is eye-opening. Years after he wrote the e-mail, he still gets hate mail.
After reading "Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster" (Presence, pg. 348), tell us about a particularly effective bit of satire that you've read, heard, or seen (on television perhaps). What made it effective?
This response is due on Monday, Nov. 1.
I would have to say that the most effective and touching thing i have seen was the movie sicko by michael moore. The movie is about healthcare, and how it is corrupt. The whole movie shows shows you how bad Americas healthcare really is compared to other countries, such as france. It gave like 5 examples of people that have died because nobody would give them care. One lady was seriously dumped on the side of the road, because she could not pay the hospital for her care. She was still in a hospital gown, but they cut her band off her wrist so no one could tell what hospital left her. At the end of this movie, i was really angry and kind of hated America. It was so effective because they used real peoples stories. It was just really sad.
ReplyDeletesnowgurl is lindsey striker by the way lol :)
ReplyDeleteTHE MOST EFFECTIVE THING I HAVE EVER SEEN WAS THE MOVIE SHCHINDERS LIST. I WATCHED THIS MOVIE IN JUNIOR HIGH AS PART OF MY REPORT ON WW1 AND WW2. BEING OF GERMAN DECENT AND HERITAGE, I COULD NEVER IMAGINE DOING THINGS TO PEOPLE AS WHAT DID HAPPEN TO THE JEWISH IN THIS TIME. THIS WAS VERY EFFECTIVE AND TOUCHING BECAUSE I GAINED KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT HAPPENDED AND LOTS OF FACTS ABOUT THE WAR. I LOVE HISTORY AND MOSTLY MILITARY HISTORY.
ReplyDeletewow, all in caps my bad
ReplyDeleteI did not know how to answer this question. So I went onto CNN and read the headlines. One of them related to emailing. It said that emailing is a distraction and that it could cause stress. My dad relays on his emails at work becaue that is how him and his co workers communicate. This topic i interesting and what makes it effective is that, technology has grown in the past couple of years. Email is causing people to be destracted at work, that is not even a new. Many people have facebooks, twitters and use those instead of emailing.
ReplyDeleteTo tell the truth i actually had to go to a dictionary and look the word up to make sure i knew what it meant. The closest thing that i could think that shows satire a bit is the movie we watched in INT 1020, it is called Path of Glory. A lot of ridicule and definitely sarcasm though not the kind we are used was also in there. It was effective because it was a war movie about the war between Germany and the French. Which was a real historic event. Plus something like what happened in the movie is something that very well did happen back then. A general wanted to capture an ant hill, a very very dangerous mission. When nearly all men were dead or wounded a lonely soldier ran form the battle, and some of the soldiers stayed in the trenches because everyone was dead or wounded three feet away. The general called this cowardice, despite the circumstances. In the court martial and after when the men were found guilty and killed, ridicule and sarcasm was thrown about every which way. It is a pity that those men had to die for nothing.
ReplyDeleteSomething that I read that I thought was completely awful was The Cruicble by Arthur Miller. In this story, which is based on all true facts, the people of this town let these young girls corrupt there minds about signs of witch-craft. Pretty much these young girls destroyed this whole town with there lies saying that everyone they didn't like basically was a witch. The leaders of this town were so easily fooled by these young girls lies when in fact they were the ones doing forms of witch craft. It wasn't until a long time after that the town realized there lies and hundreds were already dead. This just goes to show you how easily people can get hurt because of other peoples lies.
ReplyDeleteLast year in my 12th grade english class we read this book called things fall apart. it was about this guy Okonkwo and how he was the man in his nigerian tribe. Okonkwo was one of the tibes bravest men in the village. he based his life on protecting his family and village through the hardest times. Until one day everything went down hill from one mistake. by accident he killed an important man from the village. everybody betrayed him and wanted him dead or banned from the village. He ended up killing himself because he was stressed because the mistake he had caused. i thought this was the most crucial thing i have read because after what he did from his village and the people at the end of the day they all betrayed him.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Lindsey on the movie Sicko. I watched this movie with some friends not too long ago, and it really made me angry. To deny somebody medical help just because of healthcare or not having the money, is not human. And allowing people to die when they could be saved is pathetic. This movie and its views really made me sick to my stomach that America truly treats people like this.
ReplyDeletewell the most effective movie i have ever seen was the movie, "O." there is a fantastic high school basketball player who has many friends and fans. everyone admires him and wants to know him. a kid on his team, much less popular, get very jelous and intimidated by him. this kid gets the great basketball player hooked on drugs, convinces his girlfriend to break up with him and ultimatly ruins his life. unforchunatly, by the end of the movie he takes his own life, all because one of his teamates was jelous of all his achievments.
ReplyDeleteI think that the most interesting piece that i have seen latly, was the movie: Chloe. It is about a woman who is sceptical and trying to catch her husband cheating and hires a woman to temp her husband and see what happens. Through all of the hooplah, the wife learns that things are not as they always seem, you must ask the person you are skeptical of if you want the correct answers, and to have trust and forgivness. This movie although there are some rather disgusting racy scenes leaves you slightly like oh my gosh how did i not figure this out sooner. you are left irritated by the fact that the wife was no honost and open with her husband in the first place.
