Global Cooling Costs Too Much

Jonah Goldberg makes some interesting points in "Global Cooling Costs Too Much" (Presence, p. 686), but I found only one that was supported by a citation. He refers to an atmospheric scientist who suggested in Science magazine that we might need 30 international climate agreements to halt global warming.
For your response, pick an assertion Goldberg makes that you think needs more support. Suggest where Goldberg could find research to back himself up.

  1. The assertion i picked from the reading that needs more support is, "Literacy, medicine, leisure, and even, in many respects, the environment has improved mightily over the course of the 20th century, at least in the prosperous west". With this statement, he did not even tell where he got it from. It sounds like he just made it up and decided to put it in his paper. He could have got more support for his claim maybe from some environmentalists in the western united states. Overall though, he should have just done more research to be able to support it. He also could have used some more in text citations.

  2. Goldberg states, "We buy to much oil from places we should't, which makes us dependent on nasty regimes and makes tose regimes nastier"(pg.687). He needs to put in more on this topic. Who are we dependent on to fuel, manly foreigh companies. He would get this information by looking onto oil companies and learning about how much fuel we are getting from over seas.

  3. he talks about all of the energy needed to make ethanol outweights the energy produced by ethanol, i not only think that it would be interesting for him to ellaborate on this idea, but also if he was to compare the amount of emissions put out by gas with ethanol and gas without. I also think that he should be more specific about these foreign rigimes because that would help out his case in enhancing the idea of how bad it is.

  4. this author states, "We could be energy independent soon enough with coal and nuclear power. But coal contributes to global warming, and nuclear power is icky." he isn't able to prove this information by citing any resources, and it sounds like a child in fifth grade researched global warming and wrote this in their paper. i'm sure he feels as if he has to "dumb" his information down for the general public, but come on. if anybody were to read this, i don't think they would see it as a reliable source to support any evidence of global warming. he should cite his information, and maybe provide some in-text quotations.

  5. The assertion that I saw that lacked a lot of detail was the one where he says, “we buy too much oil from places that we shouldn't, which makes us dependent on nasty regimes and makes those regimes nastier.” I feel like it would help if he got actual statistics on how much oil we buy from other countries, and maybe show us other possibilities where we could get are oil from. He could get this information by looking to see how much oil we actually do get from other countries, and by looking into the different oil companies.

  6. Goldberg states, "We buy to much oil from places we should't, which makes us dependent on nasty regimes and makes tose regimes nastier"(pg.687). These facts could have easily been found on oil companys website, or even a phone call. If we are so dependant on overseas fuel, then why are we questioning our purchase? If we need the oil so bad ten why dont we start drilling in Canada or the long time debated Alaska? There is plenty of oil in the states to be found.

  7. Well besides his argument needing to be backed up because he sounds like a bumbling idiot who doesn't know what he is talking about, I chose when he said, "Their proposed remedies cost so much money-bidding starts at 1 percent of global GDP a year and rises quickly-they have to ratchet up the fear factor just to get the conversation started"(pg.687). How much is exactly 1 percent of the global GDP?? Is it really as much as this nut thinks it is? He should get himself or someone else to see what the global GDP, i am sure wall street would know. He should have it actually calculated out. I think hes making it bigger deal than it is. 1 percent globally is like 8-10 percent for America's GDP alone. I think hes seeing it through America paying it all, which isn't the case. Each country on the Kyoto Project would contribute so if you think about it, it truly is not that much for America to give. I think he needs a reality check too. Global warming is very real, there are hundreds of studies that can not be denied as proven fact.

  9. I have chosen this section of the reading because of the short amount of proof that he shows. Skeptics are heckled for calling attention to global warming scare tactics. But the simple fact is that activists need to hype the threat, and not just because that’s what the media demand of them. Their proposed remedies cost so much money — bidding starts at 1 percent of global GDP a year and rises quickly — they have to ratchet up the fear factor just to get the conversation started.

  10. Goldberg states "ethanol requires almost as much energy to make as it provides, and the costs to the environment and the economy may be staggering." in order to say this Goldberg needs to have a text citation of where he got this fact from. you cant just state that without backing it up because he could of just made that up.

  11. the assertion i picked was, "We buy to much oil from places we should't, which makes us dependent on nasty regimes and makes tose regimes nastier"(pg.687).Goldberg. the information he is lacking is that he doesnt specify where we are getting all of this oil from. A way to back up this part of his research is by calculating the amount of oil we get from U S A and see the difference from other nations.

  12. Jonah Goldberg says that "Literacy, medicine, leisure, and even, in many respects, the environment has improved mightily over the course of the 20th century, at least in the prosperous west". Goldberg should continue with this and talk about the specific good things that have improved over the years. Also this statement with no evidence to back it up, sounds just like an opinion instead of a true fact. He should have at least listed the website in which he got this information from. Then state specific medicines that have been improved or invented over the years.
